Feiko Bosma: 'a job full of dynamics'
A successful breeding program usually starts with an embryo. At Diamond Genetics, embryo collection is the responsibility of veterinarian Feiko Bosma. 'What we do is step one in helping dairy farmers get better cows. It's nice to be part of this process.'

Grown considerably
'We have grown considerably in recent years. When I started we were washing around 1,500 embryos per year, but we are now on course for 8,000 embryos per year. It has gone very fast.' A growing market that also includes the best conditions for people and animals. A new stable was built in Wijhe, fully equipped to house the precious animals and collect embryos. “I remember there was an old stable, empty and full of cobwebs,” Feiko remembers, laughing. 'It is never boring with us, our work is always dynamic and that gives me a lot of satisfaction.'

Varied work
Feiko is not only concerned with collecting the embryos, making the schedules and ensuring the very best nutrition and care for the donor heifers and the recipients are also part of his job. “We do it with a whole team, work together for the best results and have freedom and personal responsibility,” he describes working at Diamond Genetics. 'It is a flat organization with short lines of communication. We have the same drive, it is a sport for us to create the new top players. Today we are working on the dairy cow of the future.'

Specialized in fertility
Feiko joined Diamond Genetics in early 2021. 'As a veterinarian, I quickly developed a passion for fertility, and I have now been able to completely specialize in it.' He gained experience with the most modern reproductive technologies in the Netherlands and New Zealand, where he worked for a few years. “I recently flushed a pinkie that I also won as an embryo, which was a nice milestone,” says Feiko, who, in addition to embryo transplantation, is increasingly working with IVP. 'With IVP you can ultimately obtain more embryos from a donor and you can also use different bulls. But ultimately the mix of ET and IVP gives the best results and that is what matters.'
